A One-Woman Show

Written and performed by Sydney René Cox

The line between humor and tragedy is nonexistent. Humans figured that out a long time ago—we're just still uncomfortable with it.

We’re gonna talk about death and mental health. Chill, this isn’t another play where everything gets all heavy. That doesn't help us at all. At least, not anymore.

Please Don't Freak Out is a dark comedy about a 28-year-old funeral director who has spent her whole life making death bearable for other people. Five months ago she almost let it take her. Tonight, she has to decide what that means.

Help Me Bring Please Don’t Freak Out to Life

Please consider donating to this project!

This world premiere will take place at Hollywood Fringe this June, featuring an incredible team and music by independent artists in Chicago and Los Angeles.

We're raising $4,000 to make it happen. If we hit our stretch goal of $5,000, we'll professionally film the full run for submissions, pitches, and a greater chance of a life after June.

Every dollar goes into the room, and I'd be so grateful for any level of support.

Progress to goal!

About Sydney

Sydney is a Los Angeles and Chicago-based actor, writer, and intimacy coordinator.

Please Don't Freak Out is her debut one-woman show.

My grandpa was a funeral director, so this story is semi-true. Sort of.

He had a pride in his work that I’ve seldom seen, and the unique ability to make people laugh on the worst day of their lives. He never carried the work home with him, at least, not that I saw.

Everyone is going to die. We can’t run from it, though we certainly try. We also don’t talk about it, even though I firmly believe that only in the freedom of accepting our fate can we truly begin to live.

I’m no stranger to death, as none of us are. And I’m sorry ahead of time for joking about it. Except that I’m not. There is a special kind of levity in darkness, relax. Enjoy the ride.
